After leading Porter’s Chapel Academy boy’s basketball team to their best season in nearly a decade, Walter Hallberg IV has been selected as the Vicksburg Daily News Boy’s Basketball Coach of the Year.

The Eagles missed the the playoffs in the 2020-2021 season after going 6-15 In Hallberg’s first season as head coach.

Hallberg, now in his second year, led PCA to a 22-14 season where the Eagle advanced to the state tournament and played in front of big home crowds throughout the year.

“I think we did pretty good this year and those last three or four weeks we were playing at our best and we did everything we needed to do,” Hallberg said.

After picking up big scoring transfers Chris Taylor and Lawson Selby midway in his first season, Hallberg was also able to add another high scorer, Nic Williams, this year who helped PCA dominate over most of their competitors, such as Northeast Baptist.

Not only did Hallberg put in major effort to rebuild his team, he made a big life change by proposing to his now fiancé midway through the basketball season.

Many victories and a tough style of play led PCA to becoming a threat on the basketball court, making Hallberg an easy selection for this award.

“I think it speaks more about the kids than me because I give them a plan and they’re the ones who put in all the hard work,” Hallberg said.

Now that PCA is done with basketball for a few months, Hallberg can focus on preparing his team for next year. Most of his starting lineup will graduate in May.

Throughout the season, Hallberg had a good support system who cheered him on in each victory and loss, to whom he felt dedicated to show his appreciation.

“I definitely want to thank my family, my mom and dad who is always there to support me, my fiancé Laura Bradley, my assistant coach Billy White, and the late Mr. George Carr and his wife Debbie because without them I wouldn’t have been able to coach,” Hallberg said.

Hallberg is the third individual to be named as VDN’s Boy’s Basketball Coach of the Year.
