Warren Central Junior High basketball teams roll past Vicksburg

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Warren Central Junior High School’s girls’ and boys’ basketball teams earned a sweep over crosstown rival Vicksburg Junior High on Thursday night.

The night opened with the WCJHS seventh-grade girls securing a 6-0 win behind a standout performance from Zay’la Davis, who scored all six points for the Lady Vikes.

WCJHS’ eighth-grade girls followed with a strong showing in a 31-12 victory over VJHS. The Lady Vikes held an 11-5 lead at halftime before pulling away in the second half. Jornei Lane led all scorers with 14 points, while Skyla Cosby knocked down two late 3-pointers to finish with 10 points. Amelia Jackson added four points, and Laney Bennett connected on a 3-pointer.

For VJHS, KamMya Wilson scored four points, and Erien Hall added three. Kadyn Richards and Payton Williams each scored two points, while A. Jefferies made a free throw.

The WCJHS eighth-grade boys closed out the night with a 31-27 comeback win. VJHS controlled much of the first half and led 17-12 at the break before the Vikings rallied. Trailing 23-22 late in the fourth quarter, Michael Banks Jr. hit a clutch 3-pointer to give WCJHS the lead. Gayvin Turner also buried a 3-pointer in the final period.

Banks finished with 14 points, while Jayden Green contributed eight. Jaiden Jones and Turner each scored three points, and Lorenzo Thomas and Michael Davis both added a free throw.

For VJHS, Kaleb Sims led the way with 13 points, and Peyton Walker scored eight. Brandon Smith Jr. and Messiah Robinson chipped in three points apiece.
