Warren County eyes MDOT’s Inmate Litter Removal Program, pending new jail completion

Warren County is considering joining 66 other Mississippi counties in MDOT’s Inmate Litter Removal Program. However, participation hinges on the completion of the new county jail.
The initiative, part of the Mississippi Department of Transportation’s “Don’t Trash Mississippi” campaign, has seen success in surrounding areas, where inmates have been actively involved in litter collection along the interstate system.
For Warren County, participation could bring financial benefits. If both the City of Vicksburg and Warren County join, they could collectively receive $100,000 from MDOT. This would support using state inmates to clear litter from Interstate 20 and other state highways. MDOT would also provide equipment, including vehicles and trash collection supplies, for the effort.
Yet, a significant challenge remains. The current Warren County Jail does not meet the housing standards set by the Gates v. Collier ruling for state inmates. Hence, the county cannot house inmates suitable for such work programs.
The upcoming Warren County Jail will meet these standards, enabling it to house state inmates in a designated area. These inmates could then participate in state work programs. The hope is that this new facility will pave the way for the county’s involvement in such community improvement initiatives.
