Watch and Warning-Know the difference

OAR/ERL/NATIONAL SEVERE STORMS LABORATORY (NSSL)

If severe storms are forecast in your area, stay safe by making sure you are getting weather alerts and knowing what they mean.

A Tornado Watch is issued for large areas when conditions exist that can spurn tornadoes. Watches are issued a few hours before the storm hits and are meant to alert the public and give them time to take shelter.

Tornado Warnings are issued for focused areas where a tornado is going to occur or has been detected or seen.

Always be alert during a watch, and take shelter immediately when a warning is issued.
