Warren Central High School  softball team defeated No. 2 ranked Brandon 8-4 on Friday.

“I’m thrilled that we won today because we earned it and we were the better team all around,” Kayleigh Karel said.

Hits from Jenn Smith and Abby Morgan along with a double from Adalyn Anderson gave WC a 3-1 first-inning lead.

Brandon got their second run of the night from a double in the third but the Lady Vikes would quickly respond. Morgan got an inside-the-park home run in the third but it was eventually ruled a double. Kayleigh Karel would earn the next hit that led to another run after Jill Smith took off from third base to give WC the 4-2 lead.

Many controversial calls were made in the fifth but Brandon still failed to get a run. Kamryn Morson and Karel both got on base after singles but the score would remain 4-2 going into the sixth.

After a single from Jenn, Morgan would get another double that brought in a run. Karel would follow up with an RBI while Anderson stole a base at home to put the score at 7-2. WC wasn’t finished yet as Makayla Jackson got a hit that put the Lady Vikes on the board again while heading into the seventh.

K. Jordan would earn a home run in the seventh that brought in two runs but WC still had a 8-4 lead. The game ended when D. Davis grounded out to Sarah Cameron Fancher who threw it to Mary Evelyn Hossley for the last out to win the game.

Seventh grader MK Ferguson also came in late in the game to fill in for injured Lola Crozier.

“I was scared at first but I knew my teammates had my back and I knew I could get the job done to help out my team,” Ferguson said.
