Warren Central High School football team earned their 13th straight win over Vicksburg High in a close 21-13 win.

“Being 2-0 in the district was our first goal and we achieved it but to bring this win home for another year is amazing and unforgettable,” WC senior Jaylon Winters said.

The Vikings came out running with Eric Collins Jr. just before Maddox Lynch broke out on a long run. Aden Greer pounded the ball down the field and eventually scored a 10-yard touchdown as WC ate up five minutes of the clock and they went up 7-0 after Jonah Artman’s successful extra point.

DeCorey Knight Jr. carried the ball for VHS but the Gators were eventually forced to punt. A few plays later, Nash Morgan hit Jaylon “Red” Winters on a 38-yard touchdown pass. Artman kicked another successful extra point to put WC up 14-0 towards the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter consisted of mostly defense on both sides as the score remained the same. With two minutes left in the half, Mincer Minor IV caught a 63-yard pick 6 to put the Gators on the board. Abel Gonzalez kicked the extra point to put the score at 14-7.

Shortly before halftime, Ronnie Blossom and Larry Reynolds Jr. both earned a sack.

Coming out of halftime the Gators went back to the run game with a mixture of Knight and Cedric Blackmore. A face mask penalty put the Gators in WC’s territory which was followed by a 33-yard touchdown pass from Mikal Maxey to Thomas McKnight. A blocked extra point put the score at 14-13 early in the third quarter.

The Vikings didn’t hesitate to respond as Morgan connected with Maddox Lynch on a bootleg and Collins ran it in for an 8-yard touchdown just a few plays later with four minutes left in the quarter. Artman’s extra point gave WC the 21-13 lead.

As VHS went back on offense, Reynolds and Qualls continued to interrupt plays. The start of the fourth quarter consisted of multiple penalties against the Vikings which put VHS in good field position. Knight caught a 23-yard pass from Maxey but VHS eventually turned the ball over on downs.

Late in the fourth quarter, WC fed the ball to Greer and Collins as they drained the clock. With 2:15 left in the game, VHS recovered a fumble. The Gators attempted to go to their passing game but Reynolds and Blossom grabbed the late sack as the Vikings were able to kneel the ball on their next possession.

The Vikings are 4-3 and 2-0’in district play and VHS fell to 0-7 on the year.
