WC earns their 11th straight win over VHS on Friday night
Warren Central High School grabbed their eleventh straight victory over Vicksburg on Friday night in a 20-18 win.
“We knew it was going to be a battle and they were prepared mentally but we did all the necessary stuff during the week and it was a hard fought game,” Morgan said.
Both the Vikings and the Gators went head to head in the first quarter as the defense was the main focus of the game. WC was able to get on the board first from a five yard touchdown run from Trey Hall shortly after Jack Wright connected with Maddox Lynch.
The Gators went to the run game early on but couldn’t get into scoring range which gave WC the ball. Shortly after Wright getting sacked, VHS’ Nicholas Mickey blocked a punt that put them inside the 15 yard line.
Malik Montgomery would soon score from one yard out. The extra point was no good which kept WC at a 7-6 lead.
The score remained the same going into halftime with both teams still searching for rhe momentum to win.
Coming out into the second half, WC picked up some positive yards with Darius Carter running the ball. Wright then hit Zack Evans for a 50 yard touchdown to advance their lead to 14-6.
DeCorey Knight Jr. took some handoffs in the third quarter along with Montgomery to pick up some first downs. LJ Reynolds busted through the line to stop a run but the next play Montgomery ran with heart to pick up another first down.
With help of the defensive line, WC forced VHS to punt but the Vikings were put in good field position after the ball was dropped.
Carter began to pound the ball in the run game but the Gators defense cut WC short and forced a field goal that was good for 33 yards by Jonah Artman and the Vikings went up 17-6.
VHS didn’t take long to respond as Mickey returned a 96 yard kickoff return with the score sitting at 17-12 after the failed two point conversion.
The final quarter of play quickly approached and the game was still in a one scoring range. VHS got back to moving the chains on offense with some key runs until Reynolds, Roy Qualls, and Ronnie Blossom sacked quarterback Ronnie Alexander.
VHS eventually punted and a unsportsmanlike conduct call would give WC good field position. The Vikings would knock down a 27 yard field goal by Artman to go up 20-12 late in the game.
The Gators responded with a 54 yard pass from Alexander to Knight for a touchdown with VHS going for a two point conversion after only being down 20-18. On the conversion attempt, VHS’ running back was met by a host of Vikings in the backfield that left the score the same and WC taking the win.
Wright went 5 of 8 for for 72 yards and one passing touchdown. Carter ran for 61 yards and Hall finished with 43 and a touchdown. Knight compiled the most yards for VHS as he finished with 123 all-purpose yards.
