Warren Central High School softball team hung in right with No. 1 ranked Northwest Rankin in a 1-0 loss on Thursday.

“I’m very pleased and defensively you can’t ask for much better than that and I’ll take that all day against the No. 1 team in the state,” WC head coach Dana McGivney said.

The first four innings remained scoreless as both team struggled to earn a hit. The Lady Cougars would get the first hit of the game in the fifth but failed to get a run. Abby Morgan would be next to get a hit after a quick double but both teams would remain scoreless heading into the sixth.

After a couple of hits in the sixth, NWR would get their first run.

By the seventh inning, Morgan struck out a couple of batters to keep WC down by one as they came up to bat. Mary Evelyn Hossley and Sarah Cameron Fancher both got on base after singles in the final inning but the Lady Vikes didn’t pull in the run they needed to tie the game.

Morgan struck out six batters on the night and WC will travel to Clinton on Friday.
