WC’s Heather Casey named as VDN’s 2023 Girls’ Track Head Coach of the Year

Warren Central’s Heather Casey has been named the 2023 Girls’ Head Track Coach of the Year.
Casey, who recently finished her fifth year as head coach, led seven Lady Vikes to the state meet just a year after having zero attend in 2022.
“They exceeded my expectations, and we have a goal every year to compete and make it to state. We always preach togetherness, and we wanted to end each night with a trophy,” Casey said.
WC accomplished some key highlights in 2023, such as winning the WC and Vicksburg High Invitational, which they didn’t win in 2022, as well as finishing second in their District.
“Trying to get back to a winning culture has been a major goal for our program, and when people see Warren Central, we want them to respect it,” Casey added.
Throughout the season, the Lady Vikes continued to strive and reach new heights under Casey’s leadership as they improved in just about everything from last season.
“Our discipline was great, and our practices were different, but the most improvement we made was in our sprinting and distance running,” Casey said. “Everybody stepped up, and everyone wanted to compete and not just show up to meets.”
Casey, a 2008 graduate of WC, is the third to win this award.
“I’m grateful to win this award. It means a lot to have your hard work be recognized, and I know that I’m not alone in receiving it because my assistant Coach Solis stepped up and was really great, especially when I had to
go to basketball along with Coach Williams, Coach Stallworth and Coach Wilson. They were all there for me,” Casey added. “Overall, those girls earned this award because they worked hard and made no excuses, but winning is hard and they were committed and got the results they worked for in the end.”
