“We are not working an active shooter.” Police Chief Jones updates on situation at ERDC

Vicksburg Police Chief Penny Jones confirmed the situation surrounding the shooting at ERDC is not due to an active shooter.

“We are not working an active shooter,” stated Jones. “We are currently investigating an incident that took place out here but we have it under control at this time.”

Many relatives and loved ones of those that work at the campus have been concerned about the safety of those on duty.

At around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2021, a shooting incident occurred at the front gate of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Waterways Experiment Station,3909 Halls Ferry Road in Vicksburg.

A security guard at the main gate, was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Areas around ERDC were blocked off as a precaution and the campus went into lockdown.

As of noon, ERDC employees were asked to shelter in place.
