The lockdown has been lifted following a shooting incident at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) that left a security officer suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Around 11:30 a.m., a call to the 911 center stated there was a gunshot victim at ERDC. Numerous emergency crews responded and found the victim, a security guard at the main gate, had been shot in the head.

Areas around ERDC were blocked off as a precaution and the campus went into lockdown. ERDC employees were asked to shelter in place. The lockdown was lifted at 1:10 p.m.

Vicksburg Police Chief Penny Jones confirmed the situation surrounding the shooting at ERDC is not due to an active shooter.

“We are not working an active shooter,” stated Jones. “We are currently investigating an incident that took place out here but we have it under control at this time.”

The security officer was transported to Merit Health River Region, due to weather conditions making air transport to UMMC too dangerous.  The condition of the officer is unknown at this time.

The incident is still under investigation, however the shelter in place order has been lifted for employees on station. More information will be released as it becomes available.
