Mississippi no longer has any counties without COVID-19 cases.

For months, Issaquena County was the lone spot in the state that had not been touched by the virus. That ended Thursday when Issaquena reported two cases. By Saturday, the county was reporting six cases and one death.

In Warren County, the rise since the beginning of the month has been precipitous. On May 31, Warren reported 173 cases and 10 deaths. By Saturday, June 27, the county had more than doubled its cases. In June, Warren added more than 200 cases and seven more deaths bringing the total of confirmed cumulative cases to 392 and deaths to 17.

Hinds County, the state’s virus epicenter, is reporting 1,893 cases Saturday and 36 deaths. Hinds added 756 cases and 10 deaths in the past two weeks. Thirteen of the deaths in Hinds were residents in long-term care facilities, and 95 cases in long-term care facilities are under investigation.

Yazoo County reports 444 cases Saturday and six deaths, a two week rise of 143 cases and one death. Yazoo is reporting 19 cases under investigation and two deaths in long-term care facilities.

Claiborne County has also seen a precipitous rise of new cases in June. Saturday the county reports 211 cases, 91 of which have been reported in the past two weeks. Claiborne reports 10 deaths Saturday, eight of which were residents in a long-term care facility and total of 43 cases in a long-term care facility are under investigation. Claiborne County Senior Care is the site of 22 employee and 42 resident cases plus eight resident deaths.

Sharkey County has reported 15 new cases in two weeks, more than tripling the number of cases from seven cases to 22. So far, Sharkey has not reported any deaths and no outbreaks in long-term care facilities.

In all, 64 Mississippi counties now report more than 100 cases each, 45 counties report 200 or more, and 22 counties report more than 400 cases. Twelve counties report more than 500 cases each, and four counties—Hinds, Desoto Madison and Jones—report more than 1,000 cases. Only Issaquena county reports fewer than 10 cases.

Only three counties report no deaths from the virus: Quitman, Benton and Sharkey. The highest county death toll in the state is 78 deaths in Lauderdale County, which also leads the state in long-term care facility cases and deaths; 51 of the deaths in Lauderdale were people in long-term care facilities.
