VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Alderman opened the regular meeting held Tuesday, Nov. 25, by recognizing the achievements by local talented students.

Bowmar Avenue Elementary School sixth grade students of Sally McLean’s art class created a mosaic to be displayed at Vicksburg’s Catfish Row Park, and Mayor Willis Thompson was eager to accept the offering on behalf of the city.

The students incorporated many different aspects of Vicksburg in the work of art.

According to McLean, this is an ongoing effort by the students to create works of art for the park, but to also inspire young students who go to the park on field trips.

“The students wanted to create activities for younger children to be entertained,” said McLean.

This is the third installment of art donated by the Bowmar Gifted and Talented Education, GATE, students. The first piece of art came in 2023 and the second followed in 2024.

McClean said she has reached out to other schools in the district to make the project district-wide instead of simply from Bowmar.
