ADAMS COUNTY, Miss.(VDN) — A Claiborne County native who had been reported missing was found deceased Sunday inside an abandoned Adams County residence, authorities said.

Terrance Jones was discovered Feb. 1 at approximately 11:48 a.m. at an abandoned home located at 30 North Commerce Street Extension, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office. His death is now being investigated.

Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said his office was first notified of Jones’ disappearance on Jan. 26 by Claiborne County Sheriff Edward Good. The following morning, Jones’ sister contacted the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and formally requested assistance, providing additional information about his last known whereabouts.

Deputies were dispatched to a nearby residence at 28 North Commerce Street Extension, where they spoke with the homeowner, who said she had not seen Jones since December. After receiving another call regarding the missing person, deputies returned to the address but were unable to make contact with the homeowner.

While on scene, a patrol sergeant noticed an open rear door at the abandoned residence next door. Deputies reported detecting a strong odor coming from inside the home and announced their presence before entering.

Inside the residence, deputies found a body wrapped in blankets in one of the rooms. Investigators later located a wallet on the deceased containing identification belonging to Jones.

The Adams County Coroner was called to the scene and took custody of the body. It will be transported to the Mississippi Crime Laboratory, where the State Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death. Authorities said there were no obvious signs of foul play, but a full forensic examination is pending.

Jones’ family has been notified. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
