Mississippi’s Jamal Roberts is the winner of American Idol

MERIDIAN, Miss.(VDN)— Jamal Roberts, a schoolteacher from Meridian, Mississippi, was crowned the winner of American Idol Season 23 on Sunday night, becoming only the second Mississippian to claim the title. Trent Harmon of Amory won Season 15 in 2016.
Roberts, 27, impressed all the judges and viewers during the finale with three standout performances: his original single, “First Time”; a duet of “Liar” with country star Jelly Roll; and a soulful cover of The Temptations’ “Just My Imagination.” Each performance drew enthusiastic applause and critical acclaim.
Roberts’ win marked the culmination of an emotional journey that has inspired fans across the country. A physical education coach by day, he rose to national prominence for his vocal talent and grounded, humble presence.
Ahead of the finale, Meridian held a homecoming celebration that included a parade and a performance outside Meridian City Hall. The event drew an estimated 20,000 people—more than half the city’s population of just over 33,500. A video package of the celebration aired during Sunday’s show, capturing the overwhelming support Roberts received from his community.
Roberts’ success adds another chapter to Mississippi’s deep musical legacy. With his powerful voice and heartfelt performances, he now steps into the national spotlight not only as a newly crowned American Idol, but also as a symbol of small-town pride and perseverance.
