On this date: Deputy Wilson End of Watch May 17, 2009

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Deputy Sheriff Tom Rye Wilson III of the Warren County Sheriff’s Office was killed in the line of duty on May 17, 2009, while responding to a call on U.S. Highway 61.

According to reports, Wilson had overheard dispatchers checking on an ambulance crew and volunteered to respond to ensure their safety. While en route, his patrol vehicle was involved in a crash that resulted in fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wilson had served with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office for one year and previously spent 16 years with the Vicksburg Police Department.

He is survived by his wife, son, parents, and brother.
