Rosie Harris honored for 65 years of service with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc

VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN) — Rosie Harris was recently honored for 65 years of perpetual service to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. A special service was held on Sunday which was hosted by the members of the Mu Xi Omega Chapter.

The event was held at Greater Grove Street MB Church. Due to her many years of service, Harris became a Pearl Soror, which marks 65 years of service.

Harris was first initiated in 1961 through the Beta Theta Chapter at the University of Portland in Oregon.

Rosie Lee Harris is a woman whose life reflects unwavering faith, distinguished service, and a deep commitment to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Initiated in 1961 through the Beta Theta Chapter at the University of Portland in Oregon, Mrs. Harris is a Life Member whose legacy spans more than six decades of devoted service to the sisterhood and the communities she has served.

Since becoming a member of Mu Xi Omega Chapter in 1999, Mrs. Harris has been a steadfast pillar of leadership and support. She has faithfully served the chapter in the roles of Parliamentarian and Chaplain, guiding the chapter with wisdom, spiritual grounding, and an unwavering adherence to ritual and governance. Her service includes participation on numerous committees, including Archives and History, Audit, Bylaws, Fundraising, Membership, Nominating, Programs, Rituals, Sisterly Relations, and Standards. Notably, through the Programs Committee, Mrs. Harris initiated and coordinated the chapter’s Meals on Wheels outreach, extending compassion and care to the elderly in the community.

Additionally, Mrs. Harris’ dedication is also reflected in her participation in the chapter’s Signature Programs, including the Biennial Beautillion, Reading Is Fundamental, and the Service Luncheon, as well as her service on the Area Cluster Planning Committee during multiple years. On the regional level, she has contributed her time and expertise by serving on the 71st and 78th South Eastern Regional Conference Awards Committees.

Beyond Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Mrs. Harris has led a remarkable professional and spiritual life. She honorably served in the United States Navy. She retired in 1994 as Chief Nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital in North Chicago, Illinois. A devoted scholar of the Word, she is a trained and divinely anointed Biblical scholar, having served as an instructor for Warren County Baptist Seminary and the First Presbyterian Church Explorers’ Bible Class.

Mrs. Rosie Lee Harris’ life is a testimony of faith in action, excellence in leadership, and service rendered with love and humility. Today, we celebrate her enduring legacy, her steadfast commitment to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, and the countless lives she has touched through her Supreme Service to all mankind.

Soror Harris’ remarkable journey has been steadfastly supported by her loving family. We extend heartfelt gratitude to her daughters, Debra and our Sorority Sister, Sherelle, and to her cherished granddaughter, Zaria; bonus daughters, Barbara, Marguerite, Nora and Patty Ann whose love, encouragement, and support have been an integral part of her legacy of service. Their presence and continued support are a strong foundation of family that has helped sustain Soror Harris’ lifelong commitment to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and to service above self.
