The Strand to show ‘Brazil’

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The Strand Theatre, located at 717 Clay Street in downtown Vicksburg, will host a showing of Terry Gilliam’s “Brazil” Saturday, Feb. 28.

The show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $9 in advance at Highway 61 Coffeehouse and $10 at the door.

Terry Gilliam’s “Brazil” tells the story of a dreamer. Inspired by George Owell’s 1984, our Walter Mitty-like hero lives in a soulless, bureaucratic world. The government is intrusive and labels anyone who seems to oppose them as terrorists.

As a government functionary, he thinks his daydreams of slaying monsters and rescuing fair maidens offers him a safe escape; but when he leaves his desk in an effort to correct a mistake, he discovers the system is the real monster, and not every damsel in distress wants to be rescued.

Incredible art design and world building set the film firmly in a world of the future as if imagined in the 1940’s.

As a member of Monty Python, Gilliam’s vision of a dystopian future also involves absurd situations and characters: very funny, but no less dangerous.

And it’s all set to a catchy pop song from 1942 called “Brazil.”

Featuring a great supporting cast including:

Robert DeNiro

Ian Holm

Bob Hoskins

Michael Palin

But don’t forget: the popcorn is free!
