VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Vicksburg High School turned in a strong night on the pitch Thursday as the girls’ team rolled to a 9-0 shutout over Canton, while the boys battled to a 2-2 tie against the Tigers.

The Missy Gators’ offense was firing from the opening whistle. Amari Johnson delivered a standout performance with five goals, Dakota West added two, and Tamiyah Davis scored twice as well. Goalkeeper Harmony Harris recorded one save in the shutout, aided by strong defensive work, including another consistent effort from Dallas West.

“With so many new players and a few still out with injuries, the girls are really hanging in there and starting to come together as a team,” VHS head coach Maurice Gilliam said. “I’m very proud of them, and we’re right on track as we head toward district play.”

The boys’ team also showed major improvement, securing a 2-2 draw behind two goals from Dacion Brown. Abel Gonzalez and Cannon Jackson each tallied an assist. The Gators’ back line played a major role in the result, limiting Canton’s offensive chances. Canton scored both of its goals on penalty kicks following fouls in the box.

Arthur Davis had a standout night in goal, finishing with more than 18 saves, including several clutch stops in the final minutes. Defenders Casey Brown and Brandon Nailor also helped anchor the strong defensive showing.

“I’m very proud of them,” Gilliam said. “Our boys have made tremendous progress over the last two seasons, and it really showed last night. ”Adding Coach Perry Tolliver to the coaching staff has also had an immediate, positive impact on both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
