Wilkinson County track athlete killed in shooting; Teen charged with murder
WILKINSON COUNTY, Miss.(VDN) — A Wilkinson County High School track athlete was killed in a shooting earlier this week, just days before her 18th birthday.
Student-athlete Enaje Bates died from her injuries Monday. Authorities said Ja’Monta Montrell Franklin, 17, has been charged as an adult with her murder. He also faces two counts of aggravated assault.
According to multiple reports, Bates was a passenger in a vehicle traveling westbound on Highway 24 in Centreville when the shooting occurred.
Wilkinson County High School announced Bates’ death on social media.
“This heartbreaking loss is felt deeply across our school, the Wilkinson County School District and the entire community,” the post read. “She will be remembered for her spirit, her promise and the light she shared with those around her.”
“We extend our heartfelt prayers and deepest condolences to her family, friends, classmates, teachers and all who were touched by her life. May we continue to surround one another with love, strength and unity during this difficult time.”
A balloon release was held earlier this week in Bates’ honor. She was set to graduate in May and had been named Miss Senior at Wilkinson County High School.
