Culture Day draws community together on Father’s Day in Vicksburg
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —
The Vicksburg community gathered at the Vicksburg City Pavilion on Father’s Day to celebrate the inaugural Culture Day, a free event organizers hope will become an annual tradition.
Vicksburg natives Roosevelt Harris and Bobby Clark organized the event to give families an opportunity to come together and celebrate Father’s Day while promoting unity throughout the community.
“This is something we’re going to do every Father’s Day so people can come out and have a good time for free with vendors and face painting for the kids to bring the community and the cultures together,” Harris said.
The event featured food vendors, tailgating, custom vehicles, biker groups, face painting for children and music provided by DJKG. Families spent the afternoon enjoying the festivities, and organizers said the event was free and open to the public.
Harris said he intentionally scheduled Culture Day on Father’s Day because he believes the holiday does not receive the same level of recognition as Mother’s Day.
“We wanted to do something special for Father’s Day,” Harris said.
According to Harris, the event concluded without any incidents and was a positive experience for everyone in attendance.
Looking ahead, Harris said he and Clark plan to expand Culture Day next year as they continue working to bring the community together.
“We’re growing and Vicksburg is slowly growing, getting to where it needs to be, and us as a people is trying to get us there,” Harris said.
Harris also thanked Clark, Jeremy Johnson, Keithon Cooper and everyone who contributed to making the inaugural Culture Day a success.
