Shot fired in city and county

Last updated:

At around 8 p.m. Monday, June 29, a caller to 911 reported that she believed a bullet had come through the wall of her home on Pineywoods Drive off of Oak Ridge and struck her. According to the initial investigation by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, it appears residents in the 4300 block of Oak Ridge were target shooting, and a bullet penetrated their target and then traveled to the home where the woman was struck. According to Sheriff Pace, the bullet hit the woman and fell to the floor.

“It doesn’t appear to be an intentional act but a terribly negligent act,” said Sheriff Martin Pace. “People who live in the county can target shoot on their property, but they need to remember they are responsible for that bullet. You are ultimately responsible for it.”

“Even though there is nothing to indicate this was an intentional act, once we conclude our investigation, the file will be turned over to the District Attorney for review,” said Sheriff Pace.

Other individuals reached out to the Vicksburg Daily News, saying the target practice in that area was frequent and, of late, a nightly occurrence.

Shots fired in the city

In the city, there were three separate incidents of shots fired Monday evening and early Tuesday morning. Two of those were at an apartment complex on Hayes Street.

According to Vicksburg Police Department Chief Larry Burns, just after 9 p.m., a call of shots fired at the Hayes Street location came in. About an hour later, at 10:35 p.m., another call came in of shots fired at that same location. During the investigation, it was discovered there was damage from bullets to four apartments at the location.

Shortly after the 10:35 p.m. call, units investigating the Hayes Street call reported hearing shots fired in the general area. Those turned out to be in the 100 block of Athens Avenue. A bullet from that incident entered an occupied dwelling and was recovered. Chief Burns said the incident is in the early stages of investigation.

All three of these incidents appear, at this point in the investigation, to be unrelated indicated Chief Burns.

One shot on 61 North

Just before 1 a.m., the occupant of a white Kia, later identified as Montavious Miller, pulled into the Circle K on 61 North at the I-20 exit ramp. He noticed two individuals in a white Cadillac get out of their vehicle and approach him while he was seated in the vehicle. He recognized those two as people with whom he had a prior conflict, according to Chief Burns. Miller sped away from the two, and as he sped off, the two individuals shot at his Kia, striking Miller and the vehicle. Miller was treated at an area hospital for his non-life threatening wounds.

Chief Burns said all the incidents are in the early stages of investigation, but it appears this was a targeted attack.

“Not isolated to the city or county, but we need to come together”

Chief Burns went on to express his frustration with the recent rash of violence in neighboring counties, the city, and Warren County. “These are not isolated to city limits or the county, and I think we (law enforcement agencies) need to come together to address this issue,” said Burns.
