WILSON, Wyoming(VDN) — Former Vice President Dick Cheney, a dominant figure in American politics for more than three decades and a central architect of U.S. foreign policy after the Sept. 11 attacks, died Monday night from complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease. He was 84.

Cheney’s family announced his death Tuesday morning, saying he was surrounded by his wife of 61 years, Lynne, and their daughters, Liz and Mary.

“Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025,” the family’s statement said. “Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing.”

Cheney served as vice president from 2001 to 2009 under President George W. Bush. He was one of the administration’s most influential voices, helping to shape the “war on terror” and advocating for the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Before his years in the White House, Cheney was President Gerald Ford’s chief of staff in the 1970s and represented Wyoming in the U.S. House of Representatives for a decade. He later served as secretary of defense under President George H.W. Bush, overseeing the Gulf War in 1991.

Cheney is remembered by his family as a devoted husband, father, and public servant who, they said, “served our nation with honor and love.”
