Victim of yesterday’s shooting at Waleed’s gas station identified
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — One person has been shot dead at the neighborhood store at the intersection of Wisconsin and Bazinsky. On Monday, September 1, Vicksburg Police Deputy Chief, Tommy Curtis, released the name, who has been identified as 31-year-old Melvin Harris.
Just after 3 p.m., reports of shots fired came into the Vicksburg Warren 911 Call Center. According to neighbors, shots rang out on the lot of Waleed’s gas station at Bazinsky and Wisconsin. When police arrived they discovered a male on the ground with gunshot wounds. Police began lifesaving procedures that were taken over by Fire/Medic 80 and Rescue, who also responded to the scene.
Harris was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputy Chief Tommy Curtis, Sr and Captain Curtis Judge spoke with the Vicksburg Daily News. “Right now we’re investigating a shooting. We’ve got one subject deceased, one subject we’re currently talking to and another that we’re looking for,” said Judge.
Community members reported to the Vicksburg Daily News there was a brief altercation that escalated in seconds to gunshots, but Captain Judge was unable to verify that information at this time.
Family members of the victim were on the scene of the shooting. At the time of this report, the gas station remains wrapped in crime scene tape and closed to the public.
UPDATE (7:22 p.m.): According to Deputy Chief Tommy Curtis, a suspect has been arrested in this case. No names have been released at this time.
