Unity March draws crowds
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — This year on Martin Luther King Jr Day the City of Vicksburg held a unity march with the theme “100 Men in 100 Suites”.
The event was held Monday, Jan 19. beginning at 11 a.m. The marchers met at Vicksburg’s Central Fire Station and concluded in front of Vicksburg’s City Hall.
Speakers included Vicksburg’s Ward 2 Alderman Thomas TJ Mayfield, Mayor Thompson, Christopher Barnett and other local leaders. Nearly every speaker encouraged unity and mentorship.
“Dr King’s courage and dream changed the world forever,” stated on speaker. “Legacy is a daily journey to honor him and make someone’s life around you better.”
Barnett spoke of mentorship and the role everyone has in influencing those around them.
“Make mentorship around you,” said Barnett. “You don’t have to be a father to fill a father figure role in the community.”
He said respect, faith, ethics, and accountability are simple lesson that carry us through the most complex moments of life.
