VICKSBURG, Miss. – A ribbon cutting for Vicksburg’s new and long awaited Animal Shelter was held today, December 12, at the new facility on Highway 61 south.

The $2 million facility, located at 65 Cedars Rd, first approved in October, 2021, will replace the outdated facility on Old Mill Road in the Kings Community that has been plagued for years with flooding and limited space.

Attendees were able to tour the new facility. During the ribbon cutting, no animals were present, but they planned to move into their new home within the next 30 days.

This new facility includes four cat rooms, three dog rooms, an intake and treatment room, better cat cages, insulated dog doors, and a private room for meeting animals without the stress of other animals in sight. Most importantly, the shelter will now be housed in one centralized building, providing a more efficient and welcoming environment for animals, staff, and visitors.

It’s taken a while to get here

The facility has been a hotly contested issue for almost a decade. In addition to the 8 years it took, the final tally of costs has been close to 2 million dollars. Community activist Marilyn Terry was one of the driving forces that made the shelter happen.

“I think this is a credit to the citizens of Vicksburg. Every single person here and in the city wrote letters thanking people. They contributed money, children raised nickels and dimes. This is truly a community project and we should all be proud of this,” said Terry.
