City board approves new garbage rate ordinance; new rates effective immediately

VICKSBURG Miss. (VDN) — The city board approved the ordinance increasing the garbage collection rates in this morning’s board meeting. As previously reported, the fee will increase from $21 to $35 and maintaining the same rate of $27.50 for additional containers.

With the ordinance now signed into law, the rates are effective immediately and will be reflected on customer’s next bill.

“On July 18, 2025, this board took action to raise the garbage pickup rate,” said city attorney Lee Thames. “In following the law, section 21-19-2, we are required to publish for three weeks in the newspaper for everyone to know that we were raising the rates, and this order we are enacting today is approving the ordinance passed on July 18, so that as of today, this rate is now in effect.”

Below is the ordinance in its entirety:

AN ORDER APPROVING AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND ARTICLE V. SOLID WASTE, OF
THE CODE OF ORDINANCES OF THE CITY OF VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI, BY
AMENDING
SEC. 11-lOl(a). GENERALLY, TO PROVIDE REGULATIONS
APPLICABLE TO GARBAGE COLLECTION

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE BOARD OF MAYOR AND ALDERMEN OF THE CITY OF VICKSBURG
as follows:

THAT said below proposed ordinance was approved by the Mayor and Aldermen on July 18, 2025, and
published three consecutive weeks; and

THAT pursuant to Miss. Code Ann. Sec. 21-19-2, this Order adopting the Ordinance is hereby now
officially enacted, enforceable, and in effect this day raising the fee for garbage collection.
THEREFORE, BE IT ORDERED AND ORDAINED as follows:

SECTION ONE: Sec. 11-I0I(a) of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Vicksburg, Mississippi is hereby
amended as it presently exists, raising the garbage collection rate fee from $21.00 to $35 .00 and maintaining the same rate of $27.50 for additional containers.

SECTION TWO: The following language shall be substituted and amended in place of the current
language in Sec. 11-lOl(a) Generally, and shall state as follows:
Sec. 11-101. Generally

(a) To defray the cost of establishing, operating, and maintaining a system for the collection and
disposal of garbage, the City does hereby fix and set a fee or charge of thirty-five dollars ($35.00)
per month to the following: i) each single-family generator of garbage; ii) each individual
household residing in a building with three (3) apartments or less; and iii) each small commercial
establishment where the garbage will be picked up two (2) times per week. Single-family
residential generators of garbage may request one ( 1) additional container or small commercial
establishments may request up to three (3) additional containers at an additional charge to be
assessed of twenty-seven dollars and fifty cents ($27.50) per month. There shall not be more than
two (2) garbage containers for any residential account.

SECTION THREE: The remainder of Sec. 11-101 subsections (b )-( e) is not amended or modified, thus,
Section 11-101 subsections (b )-( e) shall remain the same and in full force and effect.
