Headquarters Barbershop’s Genoa Williams and Angela Shelby receive AMAZE recognition
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Two community leaders were recognized Monday with the AMAZE Award, an honor created in memory of the late Alderman Michael Mayfield Sr.
Ward 2 Alderman T.J. Mayfield, who founded the award last year to highlight outstanding community service, presented the recognitions during Monday’s city board meeting.
“This is something I started a little bit more than a year ago, in honor of my dad for people who do outstanding work in the community,” Mayfield said. “I’m excited to continue on with AMAZE for this month.”
This month’s AMAZE Award recipients were Angela Shelby and Genoa Williams of Headquarters Barbershop.
Mayfield praised Shelby, who was unable to attend, for donating more than $1,000 in toiletries and school supplies to local children. He said her efforts helped prepare nearly 300 students for the new school year.
“It came out of her pocket. It was not something that Walmart did,” Mayfield said. “She just did it for the young people in the community.”
Williams and his barbershop were honored for their efforts to support Vicksburg youth. For the second consecutive year, Headquarters Barbershop provided more than 50 free haircuts, free breakfasts, and books, while also launching a literacy program that rewards children with discounted haircuts for reading.
“The Alderman Mayfield Award for Building Excellence is presented to Mr. Genoa Williams and the Headquarters Barbershop for outstanding dedication and commitment to Vicksburg’s youth,” Mayfield announced.
Williams, joined by his staff, credited his team for the barbershop’s impact.
“Y’all know we can’t cut 50 to 90 heads in one sitting,” Williams said. “I got a whole team. Thank you so much.”
