Gators shutout Riverside on senior night
VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN) — Senior night proved memorable for both the Vicksburg High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, as each squad earned decisive victories over Riverside High School on Friday under head coach Maurice Gilliam.
The Missy Gators set the tone early with a dominant 7-0 shutout of Riverside in the opening match. Vicksburg wasted little time getting on the scoreboard and controlled possession throughout the contest, building a commanding 6-0 lead by halftime.
Senior Amari Johnson led the offensive attack, scoring three goals to pace the Missy Gators. Johnson also found the net for the final goal of the night, putting an emphatic finish on her senior night performance.
“I feel this is a good way to go out and I’m proud of myself and this team,” Johnson said.
Camden McGloster, Leah O’Bryant and Tamiyah Davis each added a goal in the shutout victory, as the Missy Gators’ defense limited Riverside’s scoring opportunities from start to finish.
In the boys’ match, heavy rain began to fall shortly after kickoff, but the Gators were unfazed. Vicksburg jumped out to a quick lead and held a 4-0 advantage by halftime. Due to the weather conditions, the game was called early.
Cannon Jackson and Allan Allen each scored two goals for the Gators in the shortened contest. Goalkeeper Arthur Davis anchored the defense, recording six saves to preserve the shutout and cap off a successful senior night for Vicksburg.
