Larry Tyrone inducted into Vicksburg-Warren School District Athletics Hall of Fame
VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN) — Larry Tyrone was inducted into the Vicksburg-Warren School District Athletics Hall of Fame, receiving the prestigious honor during a ceremony held in late 2025 at the Vicksburg Convention Center.
Tyrone’s name remains synonymous with excellence throughout the halls of Warren Central, where he served as a coach in track and field and football at Warren Central Junior High School and Warren Central High School from 1982 to 2017. Over a remarkable 35-year career, Tyrone established himself as a cornerstone of one of the most successful athletic programs in the state.
In 1982, Tyrone founded the school’s first competitive eighth-grade track team, laying the foundation for long-term success at the varsity level. He also played a key role on the varsity football coaching staff, serving as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator. Throughout his tenure, Tyrone worked under four different head coaches and was part of the staff during Warren Central’s state championship seasons in 1988 and 1994.
While known for his demanding coaching style and creative disciplinary drills — famously labeled “Devil Dips” and “Gorillas” — Tyrone earned widespread respect for his ability to develop both athletes and character. His leadership helped guide numerous players to college football opportunities, while many others credit his mentorship with shaping them into successful men beyond the field.
Tyrone is a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. and previously served as president of the Kappa Epsilon Sigma Chapter.
