Matthew Darell “Spoonie” Williams, III

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Matthew Darell “Spoonie” Williams, III, a Vicksburg resident, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 18, following a sudden illness.  He was 53. 
He accepted Christ as his savior at an early age at the Holy Hill Baptist Church in the Oak Ridge community.  He attended Bovina Elementary School, Warren Central Junior High School and Warren Central High School, where he excelled at basketball.  He also attended Jackson State University where he continued his passion for basketball. He met no strangers and treated all people the same.  He was employed at the Family Dollar Store, 2080 South Frontage Road for over 10 years.   

Matt “Spoonie” Williams, was preceded in death by his father Matthew “Fox” Williams, Jr.; maternal grandparents Edgar “Bob” London, Sr. and Rosetta Rush London; paternal grandparents Matthew Williams, Sr. and Lucy Priestley; two aunts Mary Ann Brown and Matte Mae Franklin; four uncles Melvin Williams, Edgar “Zeke” London, Jr., Eddie Charles London, Sr. and Michael “Mookie” London.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his mother Mary Lee London-Williams; sisters Ebony M. Williams and Charity Williams both of Vicksburg, and Sharon Blackmore of Edwards, Miss.; his brothers Derrik Williams of Monroe ,La., Erik Williams, Jr., Larry Blackmore, and Marcus Williams all of Vicksburg; his aunts Joann Parks, Gloria Thomas, Molly Tubwell, Sarah Brown, Brenda Wilson, Beverly Gaskin, Cynthia Johnson and Augustine Matthews all of Vicksburg; and a host of great aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and others.

Funeral services for Matthew Darell “Spoonie” Williams, III, are to be held on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home with the Reverend Barrett Lewis officiating; interment shall follow in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.
