Mississippi AG Lynch Fitch: Robocalls “gateway to scams” as states launch major sweep

JACKSON, Miss. (VDN) — Attorney General Lynn Fitch has launched Operation Robocall Roundup, a multistate push to crack down on illegal robocalls. The effort is part of the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force, which includes Fitch and attorneys general from 50 other states.

As part of the operation, Fitch sent warning letters to 37 voice providers accused of failing to follow Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules designed to curb robocalls. Those violations include not responding to government traceback requests, failing to register in the FCC’s Robocall Mitigation Database, or neglecting to file a plan to reduce illegal calls.

“These calls and texts are more than a nuisance; they are often the gateway to scams,” Fitch said. “In June alone, people received more than 4.5 billion robocalls nationwide and we’re taking the decisive steps to hold the companies behind them accountable. I will continue to stand up for Mississippi consumers and protect them from these unsolicited and potentially harmful calls.”

The task force also notified 99 downstream providers that accept traffic from the targeted companies, warning them they are doing business with noncompliant operators. The FCC announced it will remove seven of the providers from the mitigation database, which will block other carriers from routing calls from their networks.

The task force was formed in 2022 to investigate and take legal action against companies responsible for high volumes of illegal and fraudulent robocall traffic.
