VCS to break ground on arts and athletic complex

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Vicksburg Catholic Schools will be breaking ground on a new arts and athletic complex.
Vicksburg’s oldest educational institution is preparing to mark a historic milestone this week as Vicksburg Catholic School (VCS) breaks ground on a new state-of-the-art Multi-Purpose Performing Arts and Athletic Complex—a first-of-its-kind facility in the school’s 165-year history.
The new complex will serve as a transformative space where arts, athletics, and academics come together to support the development of the whole child. Designed for use by students in Pre-K through 12th grade, the facility will house a stage for fine arts performances, space for athletic activities, worship space for all-school Mass, and allow for a dedicated middle school building.
“Our school began in 1860 with just a few students, and today we have more than 500,” said Kristi Smith, VCS Development Director. “Since those early days, it has been our goal to teach the whole child – mind, body, and spirit. By creating a modernized place where creativity, teamwork, and scholarship intersect, we’re equipping our students with the skills and confidence to thrive long after graduation.”
The groundbreaking is set for Friday, Sept. 26 at 11 a.m. on the corner of Hayes Street and Clay Street. Speakers will include Vicksburg Mayor Willis Thompson, Diocese of Jackson Bishop Joseph Kopacz, as well as school leadership. The dirt turn will feature school leaders and students of all ages. Vicksburg Catholic School is made up of the Sisters of Mercy Early Learning Center for children ages six weeks to three years old; St. Francis Xavier Elementary, serving Pre-K3 through 6th grade; and St. Aloysius High School for 7th-12th grade students.
