VHS girls track ranked No. 1 in 5A, Warren Central No. 3 in 6A
VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN) — Preseason rankings have listed the Vicksburg High School girls’ track and field team as the top-ranked program in Class 5A. The Missy Gators were named No. 1 in a list released earlier this week and are projected as early favorites to contend for a state championship.
Warren Central High School also earned preseason recognition, coming in at No. 3 in Class 6A. The Lady Vikes sit just behind Hattiesburg and Terry in the preseason poll.
Vicksburg High and Warren Central were previously in the same classification, but recent realignment moved the Missy Gators to 5A while Warren Central remained in 6A, where it also competed during the 2025 season.
The Missy Gators are led by head coach Deatra Cable, who guided VHS to a second-place finish at the state meet in 2024 and a third-place showing in 2025. Zion Knox and Amiyah Hall each captured individual state championships last season. VHS is also ranked No.7 overall in the state.
Warren Central is coached by Heather Casey, whose program saw four athletes post strong performances at the state meet last year. One of those standouts, Adria Burrell, signed with the University of West Alabama in 2025.
The official track and field season begins in February. Preseason rankings for the boys’ teams have not yet been released.
