Vicksburg man killed in Rankin County hit-and-run
RANKIN COUNTY, Mississippi. (VDN) — A Vicksburg man was killed early Sunday in a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 55 in Rankin County, according to authorities.
The victim has been identified as 53-year-old Ernest Stevenson of Vicksburg. The Mississippi Highway Patrol said Stevenson was crossing the roadway on Interstate 55 South near Interstate 20 West. He was struck by an unknown vehicle, traveling southbound on I-55.
The driver left the scene, according to reports. Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 12:08 a.m. Stevenson was pronounced dead at the scene.
MHP continues to investigate the incident and has not released any information about a possible suspect vehicle.
Family members announced Stevenson’s death in a social media post later on Sunday, expressing heartbreak over the sudden loss.
“On behalf of my sister-in-law, nieces and nephew, it is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved loved one, Mr. Ernest Stevenson (Polk Chop),” the post said. “Our hearts are heavy as we navigate through this difficult time of loss.”
The family also asked the community for patience and compassion as they grieve. “We kindly ask for your understanding and patience as our family takes the time we need to process this unexpected pain. We appreciate your prayers, love, and support, and we will share further details when we are able.”
