VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — A day on the Mississippi River turned into a once-in-a-lifetime catch for Vicksburg native Baylen Warnock, who reeled in five catfish weighing between 50 and 75 pounds each.

Warnock was joined by his great-uncle Kenny Warner and father Josh Warnock during the fishing trip, which began early in the morning and lasted until nearly dark. The trio fished for hours without much success before things suddenly changed.

“This was like something you never seen before,” Baylen said. “We’d been out there all day and hadn’t caught anything at first, but when it turned on, it turned on.”

Warnock, 25, said he has been fishing most of his life and credited his father for introducing him to the sport at an early age.

“My daddy had me out here when I was 2 or 3 years old, and I probably shouldn’t have been out here,” he said with a laugh. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing because you might catch one of these fish, but it’s rare to catch five.”

Warnock said fishing is one of the many reasons he loves his hometown.

“I was born and raised here, went to high school here, and now I’m raising my kids here because I love it,” he said.

The family said the day on the river was one they’ll never forget.
