Vicksburg to implement fire inspection fees in line with other Mississippi cities

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The Vicksburg Fire Department has asked the city board to approve charging fees for fire inspections and permits, a move officials say aligns with practices in other Mississippi municipalities and will help fund safety operations without relying solely on the city’s general fund. The city currently absorbs all costs related to the inspections.

“This is going to add a fee for service for our fire inspection division,” interim Fire Chief Trey Martin told the city board. “Our team goes out and inspects all businesses across the city all year long. If you have a new business coming in, regular tests, new construction, or permits, when our inspector has to go out and approve it, this is just a fee for that service.”

Inspector Nathaniel Williams said fire inspections play a critical role in identifying hazards and ensuring code compliance at businesses throughout the city.

“Charging for these inspections and permits places the financial responsibility on those who directly use the service,” Williams said. “It’s in line with best practices across Mississippi, promotes accountability, and helps maintain safe operations. Implementing these fees is a responsible action that promotes safety, sustainability, and fairness.”

Williams said he reviewed fee schedules from other municipalities but set Vicksburg’s rates lower. “I didn’t go along with their fees, but I did lower our fees down,” he said.

The new fees are expected to go into effect following board approval of the ordinance.
