Vicksburg’s Central Fire Station celebrates 100 years

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Dozens gathered in the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 19, inside the bays of Vicksburg’s Central Fire Station to celebrate the building’s 100th birthday.

“Look anyone who has come up in this fire department knows they get their start right here at Central Station,” said Vicksburg Fire Chief Harry “Trey” Martin as he welcomed guests and attendees.

Several local leaders were on hand to celebrate the special occasion including Alderman Thomas “TJ” Mayfield, Police Chief Larry Burns, Sheriff Martin Pace and Mississippi State Representative Oscar Denton.

The featured speaker at the event was retired VFD Chief Kevin Westbrook who joined the department in 1979.

“This place hasn’t changed that much since then,” remarked Westbrook. He spoke of many instants of his history with Central Station and the special memories the building gives him.

Following the speeches cake and refreshments were served to guests.
