23 inmates at Issaquena complete First Aid and CPR training

ISSAQUENA COUNTY, Miss.(VDN) — 23 incarcerated individuals at the Issaquena County Correctional Facility recently completed First Aid and CPR training, gaining skills designed to save lives both inside the facility and after their release.

A total of 23 individuals participated in the training, with 15 of them featured during the program’s recognition component. The training was held Nov. 25, 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to provide meaningful rehabilitation opportunities within the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

The First Aid and CPR course focused on emergency preparedness, teaching participants how to respond to medical situations such as cardiac arrest, choking and other life-threatening incidents. Facility officials said the training helps create a safer environment while also equipping participants with practical skills they can use in everyday life.

“First Aid and CPR training provides the offenders of Issaquena CRF with life-saving skills that can be used in all aspects of life,” said Derrick Chambers, private and regional director. “These are skills that build confidence, responsibility and accountability.”

MDOC officials said the program aligns with the department’s broader commitment to rehabilitation, public safety and successful reentry. By offering hands-on training and certifications, correctional facilities aim to prepare incarcerated individuals for productive roles in their communities upon release.

Programs such as First Aid and CPR training are part of MDOC’s emphasis on evidence-based programming that encourages personal growth and reduces recidivism. Officials noted that participants not only learn technical skills, but also develop teamwork, discipline and a greater sense of responsibility for the well-being of others.
