Food Review – Mama Street Corn
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — We haven’t done a food review in a very long time, but Mama Street Corn is about to change all that.
We have rules regarding our reviews. If it’s bad, we’re not going to publish it. Any restaurant can have a bad day, meal, angry employees, staff shortage -whatever. And as tough as the restaurant business is in a town with a tight wallet like Vicksburg, the last thing we want to do is cause any business the agony and financial pain a negative review can create.
Let’s talk about street corn. ‘Mama Ross’ set up on Washington Street at the Developmental Disability Month event at 1418 Washington Street last weekend. We’ve done a few stories on the good work being done by great people at that location. A few vendors set up at the play date, and while covering it, there was a non-stop line of people getting food from Mama Street Corn.
Once your beloved reporter finished their photos and story-writing, we sauntered up to the stand. Mama Ross was finishing the previous order while her helper took money and interacted with people. We ordered one of everything. One hot dog, one corn, and one tortilla chip dessert.
The Somethin-Something Hot Dog
She has a name for it, but it doesn’t matter because you need to know it was the best hot dog I’ve eaten in my thousand or so years of eating hot dogs. The dog and bun were ones you can get most anywhere, but the treatment! It was served on the bun with a layer of homemade coleslaw. Big, thick slices, full-flavored slaw, smothered in Mama’s white sauce, with chili con carne, and topped with Cajun spice seasoning. It looks like a sin.
On a scale of “A polite thank you, it was good” to “Marry Me,” it rates as we have grandchildren together.
Mama Street Corn
This was the main attraction. Practically everyone there was eating one at some point during the day. They all had a focus, like they had a mission to eat all of that corn. The cob, the wooden skewer…it was hypnotizing corn. Mama dipped it in a white sauce, sprinkled it with some seasoning, said a few magic words, put some Mama Street Corn mojo on it, spun around twice …you get the vibe. It was incredible. Once I bit into it, time stopped. First, it is corn on the cob, so you get a sweet corn texture covered in a fully seasoned and flavorful white sauce. It is dipped several times, so every kernel is fully covered and physically involved with the sauce. There are a couple of spice treatments on top of that that are a strong contrast to the white sauce and corn. They all seem to be alive on their own and working together seamlessly. My mouth was very happy.
Get the corn, try not to pass out.
Tortilla Chips dipped in criminal intent and chocolate
I had a desire to eat the chips. The chips were crispy, covered in something that would make you write bad checks, and ask for the officer’s supervisor. Mama then drizzled them with a chocolate sauce and sprinkled some chopped nuts on top. They looked great. I got a couple of them down, and they were wonderful. But I was so full from the hypnotic magic corn and family making hot dogs, that the chips were put in the fridge, and in the morning I had them for breakfast. Then I went to church.
Conclusion
If you’re at an event and see Mama Street Corn, prepare to become a grandparent. Get it, hug them, and thank them for always showing up for our community. Save the chips for breakfast.
