Vicksburg native Malcolm Butler joins Ice Bucket Challenge in support of Chris Johnson
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —
Vicksburg native and former NFL defensive back Malcolm Butler has joined the Ice Bucket Challenge to show support for former NFL running back Chris Johnson, who recently revealed he is living with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Butler shared a video on social media last week in which a bucket of ice water was poured over his head before he delivered a message of encouragement to Johnson.
“You got your brotherhood, and that’s the NFL, and you got your family and your friends,” Butler said in the video. “Don’t worry about nothing. We got you.”
Johnson announced that he was diagnosed with ALS last year at the age of 39.
“There’s no history of ALS in my family,” Johnson said in an interview. “My doctors believe my case is what’s called sporadic ALS, which is actually how the vast majority of ALS cases happen.”
ALS is a progressive disease of the nervous system that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The condition causes muscle weakness that worsens over time.
Johnson is best known for his standout NFL career, particularly with the Tennessee Titans. During the 2009 season, he rushed for 2,006 yards and scored 14 touchdowns, becoming one of the league’s most dominant running backs.
Since Johnson publicly shared his diagnosis, numerous current and former athletes have participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness and show their support.
