Willie Glasper Sr. of Vicksburg was presented with the Key to the City on Thursday during a dinner held in his honor at the Vicksburg Event and Business Center.

Vicksburg Mayor Willis Thompson and Aldermen T.J. Mayfield and Vickie Bailey recognized Glasper for his decades of dedicated service to the community. Along with the Key to the City, Glasper received a plaque inscribed with Hebrews 6:10 (NIV): “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.”

The plaque also reads: “In honor and recognition of a lifetime of service, leadership, and dedication to the city of Vicksburg. May God continue to bless you and your family.”

For decades, Glasper has been a pillar of the Vicksburg community. He is known for helping organize numerous military recognition events and serves as president of the Vicksburg Homecoming Benevolent Club, which awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to local students each year. Just last week, the organization awarded $13,000 in scholarships. Glasper also plays a leading role in recognizing community leaders and law enforcement officers through annual events.

The ceremony was hosted by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Omicron Rho Lambda Chapter, which also presented Glasper with its Legacy Award and Lifetime Achievement Award.

Several community leaders spoke during the event, along with Glasper, who is currently battling cancer.

While Glasper faces another difficult fight, those who honored him reflected on a lifetime marked by faith, service and a lasting commitment to the Vicksburg community.
