Hall, Sanders, Odom, Nunnally named Vicksburg High basketball cheer captains
La’Porsha Hall, Mariah Sanders, Aja Odom, and Tiana Nunnally have been named the Vicksburg High School basketball cheer captains for the upcoming season, with Hall serving as head captain under first-year coach Kya Huell.

La’Porsha Hall, Mariah Sanders, Aja Odom and Tiana Nunnally have been selected as the Vicksburg High School basketball cheer captains for the upcoming season.
Hall will serve as the team’s head captain, while Sanders, Odom and Nunnally have been named co-captains. The four leaders will compete under first-year head coach Kya Huell.
Hall
Hall earned the promotion to head captain after serving as a co-captain last season.
“This is a good step to being head captain and I’ve learned a lot last year as co-captain about being a captain in general such as being there for your cheer sisters and always sticking on their side,” Hall said.
Hall said she hopes to help the team succeed in cheer competitions this season while also bringing back elementary school students to participate in halftime performances.
Hall has been recognized as an All-American Cheerleader and received the Star Cheerleader Award during her time at Vicksburg High.
“Cheer is home and it’s where I can be happy at,” she said.
Hall has been cheering since her freshman year and now holds the team’s highest leadership position. She also serves as vice president of her class. After graduation, she plans to attend Alcorn State University or Southern University, where she intends to major in biology with a minor in business. She is the daughter of Betty Hughes and Terry Hall.
Sanders
Sanders has worked her way into a leadership role after previously serving as the team’s manager.
“It’s a very good feeling but the bonds that you make with cheer is the best because I love my sisters dearly,” Sanders said.
Sanders has been cheering since elementary school and has earned All-American Cheerleader honors as well as the Most Spiritual Leader award.
As co-captain, Sanders said she is looking forward to facing new challenges and creating lasting memories with her teammates.
Sanders serves as senior class president. She plans to attend Jackson State University after graduation to major in pre-nursing. She is the daughter of Kourtney Wilkerson and Deon Sanders Jr.
Odom
Odom, one of two junior co-captains, said she is excited to bring new ideas to the team.
“I’m excited and proud to be able to lead the team and set an example for the year,” Odom said. “I want to be able to make new cheers for the team instead of using the ones from the previous years.”
Odom has been cheering since the eighth grade and said her favorite parts of the sport are cheer battles and performing eight-count routines.
As co-captain, Odom said she plans to work hard in practice, remain patient with her teammates and continue developing in hopes of becoming head captain next season.
Although she is entering her junior year, Odom said she hopes to become a real estate agent while also pursuing cosmetology. She is the daughter of Larry Odom and Shakita Hunt.
Nunnally
Nunnally, the team’s second junior co-captain, said she is excited to step into a leadership role.
“I’m proud and I feel like a leader and I know what it takes to be a captain,” Nunnally said.
Nunnally has been cheering since the eighth grade and said her favorite part of the sport is the bond she shares with her teammates. She added that one of her goals is to see the team perform together as one both on and off the court.
Nunnally is the daughter of Jacquelyn Nunnally and Michael Odom.
