The State Fire Marshal’s Office has determined the cause of the blaze at Brookdale Senior Living in Clinton which occurred Wednesday, Oct. 21. According to officials the ignition started outside near the maintenance office entrance, then spread inside to a residential area.

Reports indicate the fire was caused by inappropriate disposal of smoking materials.

Reports state the flames spread quickly because of combustible materials stored at the entrance to the maintenance office. Items contributing to the blaze were a mattress, box springs, and other household items. Authorities said smoke alarms were present and working.

A release stated the facility had a suppression system in place, and emergency officials were notified early by the alarm company.

The fire claimed the lives of 81-year-old Sandra Laird and 82-year-old Harris Anthony, both of Vicksburg.

“I want to offer my sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of Mrs. Laird and Mr. Anthony. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” said State Fire Marshal and Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney.
