Two Vicksburg natives were killed Wednesday in a fire at an assisted living facility in Clinton, according to WLBT.

Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard identified the victims as Sandra Laird, 81, and Harris Anthony, 82.

The fire occurred around 5 p.m. at Brookdale Senior Living on East Northside Drive in Clinton. According to earlier reports, at least 45% of the building was burned.

The city of Clinton also issued a statement following the deadly fire.

“The City of Clinton grieves with you,” Clinton Mayor Will Purdie said Wednesday. “I was once again reminded of the strength of this community through its overwhelming response. As they always do in times of adversity, our citizens came together in a moment’s notice to help their friends and neighbors. I’d like to thank all of our local churches and community groups that rendered assistance.”

The State Fire Marshal’s Office has taken over the investigation. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
