The “Recovery Re-entry Academy” officially kicked off Tuesday, Oct. 6, with a welcoming party at the Mission on Washington Street. Angela Turner wrote the grant which provided funding for the program, “People get out of the Mission’s four month program and are like, ‘Now what?'”

The Re-entry Academy is a seven week program which focuses on navigating the modern work landscape. Participants will revisit skills such as  managing their time and money, talking to employers, succeeding in the work environment, using modern forms of communication, including email, and developing an action plan for the next phase of their lives.

“One of the main things we’re teaching is serving and how can we be an asset instead of taking from society, giving back to society,” said Mission Director Earnie Hall.

Michael Harper is a resident of the Mission and will be in the first group attending the academy.

“I’m really on board with this. I appreciate all you all and what you’re doing. All you guys that work behind the scenes, I really appreciate you and what you’re doing to help,” said Harper.

The River City Rescue Mission works with people who are recovering from addiction or have been released from a correctional facility and need time to transition back into society. The faith-based program focuses on developing a strong work ethic while relearning the basics of social structures.
