A Vicksburg resident has died in a house fire on Speed Street.

Just after 10:30 p.m., a report came in of a house fire on Speed Street. The first unit to respond radioed that the single-family structure was “fully involved,” meaning there were flames throughout the structure, preventing firefighters from entering the home.

Several units including Engine 7 with the Vicksburg Fire Department worked the fire from the outside of the home. Rescue, Engine 8, and Battalion 1 were on the scene along with Chief Derrick Stamps.

The units worked to extinguish the fire and did so quickly despite the intensity of the flames. They began by extinguishing the fire in the single-family home and then worked on the garage area with at least two hoses.

Once the fire was out they were able to enter the structure and found a person deceased in the home.

Chief Derrick Stamps confirmed the fatality and that his family had been notified.

The deceased is Ernest Gleese, 75. He is survived by his son, Norman.
