VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN) — Cedric Jackson has been named the defensive coordinator for the Warren Central High School girls flag football team.

Head Coach Brad Nolan announced Jackson’s hiring last week as the program prepares for its inaugural season, which begins later this month.

“This is something new, but I’m excited and ready for it,” Jackson said.

Jackson will also serve as assistant head coach. He is coming off a state championship season with the Warren Central football team, where he serves as the assistant offensive line coach. The move to girls flag football marks a new chapter for the 13-year veteran coach as he shifts from coaching on Friday nights to leading female athletes during the spring season.

“That’s going to be the hardest part,” Jackson said with a laugh. “I’m used to coaching kids hard, but I’m not going to go Friday-night hard, so they’ll be fine with the way I coach. Plus, I have to take into consideration that they are girls.”

Jackson has been a member of the Vikings’ football staff since 2012. Fresh off a state championship run, he said he plans to bring that same winning mentality to the flag football program.

“I’m excited to go out there and we’ll joke and have fun, but when it’s time to work, we’ll definitely put in that work,” Jackson said.

As a first-time defensive coordinator, Jackson said he looks forward to building a strong defensive unit, shutting out opponents and forming a special bond with his players.

Jackson is a 2002 graduate of Warren Central High School.

The team will begin practice next week and open its season March 26 on the road against Greenville High School.
