WASHINGTON D.C. (VDN) — The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced Tuesday that the Ronald Reagan Building complex in Washington, D.C. will serve as the new headquarters for the FBI, marking a major milestone in a process that has spanned nearly two decades.

Why this decision?

The decision replaces long-standing plans to construct a new suburban campus with a move into an existing federal facility, offering a faster, more cost-effective solution. Officials said the relocation will avoid billions in new construction costs and eliminate over $300 million in deferred maintenance at the FBI’s current J. Edgar Hoover Building.

“This is a historic moment for the FBI,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. “Through our strong partnerships with members of Congress and GSA, we are ushering FBI Headquarters into a new era and providing our agents of justice a safer place to work. Moving to the Ronald Reagan Building is the most cost effective and resource efficient way to carry out our mission to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution.”

Why the Reagan Building?

The Reagan Building already houses several federal agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The GSA will coordinate with CBP and other tenants to ensure a smooth transition while maintaining continuity of operations for all agencies involved.

“FBI’s existing headquarters at the Hoover building is a perfect example of a government building that has accumulated years of deferred maintenance,” said GSA Acting Administrator Stephen Ehikian. “I am proud of GSA’s commitment to working with Director Patel and his FBI team to find a building that best supports their mission and their people.”

The selection aligns with the administration’s broader federal real estate strategy, which emphasizes better use of existing government-owned facilities to reduce waste and improve agency performance.

“This move not only provides a world-class location for the FBI’s public servants, but it also saves Americans billions of dollars,” said GSA Public Buildings Service Commissioner Michael Peters. “We are proud to partner with Director Patel to improve the quality of space for a productive workforce in service to national security and taxpayers.”

Preparations for the FBI’s relocation will begin immediately, with GSA overseeing logistics to minimize disruption and maintain security throughout the transition.
