Legends from Warren County: Topless Horseback Ride

WARREN COUNTY, Miss. (VDN) — During the early days in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, three women rode horses wearing little more than their smiles.
When Katrina hit Warren County in August of 2005, the storm caused massive power outages and shortages in supplies, including ice and gasoline. Long lines formed at gas stations at all hours of the day and night, with locals desperate to remain mobile.
One such night, three resourceful Warren County country women decided they had to get out of the house and hit up a favorite night spot on 61 North. Low on gas but high on motivation, they decided to mount their trusty steeds and ride them the short distance up 61 to Mr. Nasty’s.
After a couple of hours and a few drinks, it was closing time at the watering hole. Even though it was 2 a.m., it was still hot out. After suffering without air conditioning for close to a week, and maybe a little bit under the influence, the girls decided it was a good time to take off their tops for the ride home.
Down the road, a long line of cars was on 61 waiting for the gas truck to arrive at the Super Junior.
“The cars were blocking a lane of traffic all the way back to Cable Lynx,” said former sheriff’s deputy Chris Satcher.
The long line of cars, probably bored out of their minds after sitting for hours, saw the early morning ride.
“911 was deluged with calls,” laughed Satcher. “Concerned for their safety, we rushed to the scene.”
Deputies were able to finally catch up with the Lady Godiva wannabes around Holt Collier.
“We were able to stop two of the women, but a third one took off,” explained Satcher.
That third one revealed their identity to the Satcher this past Thursday night.
“I was the one who took off,” said the now-married mother of five.
However, one of the other late-night, half-clad horseriders wasn’t happy about being stopped.
“She was mad and arguing, then she kicked me,” said Satcher. “I yanked her off the horse and put her in cuffs.”
The deputies gave the girls shirts to wear and, courtesy of Warren County, provided them with a space to spend some time sobering up.
